Drone races will be taking place on June 3, 2017, sometime between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm at Whirlpool Field, St. Joseph, Michigan. A request by the organizers to use the surface of the Whirlpool Compass Fountain has been approved by city commissioners. Spectators will be able to view the first-person-view (FPV) goggle wearing drone pilots and their drones race around the parkour from behind the fence that will safely delineate the drone race track. The drone race is intended to draw attention to the increasingly growing sport of drone racing, a sport some say is becoming as popular as NASCAR. The drone races are taking part within a broader tech event that will feature, among many other things, exhibits on robotics, rocketry, 3D printers, as well as commercial and recreational drones.
